Giant Fish Sculptures Made From Discarded Plastic Bottles

At the Rio 20 Conference, world leaders, along with thousands of participants from governments, the private sector and other groups, came together to try and shape how we can reduce poverty, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection on an ever more crowded planet to get to the future we want.

An art installation on Botafogo Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil shows three gigantic fishes made from discarded plastic bottles. The slogan on a sign beside the installation loosely translates to, “recycle your attitude”. The sculptures were created to raise awareness for the recently completed United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, dubbed Rio+20. Also, they are illuminated from the inside at night creating a pretty spectacular light show.

Rashad Alakbarov paints with shadows and light

Artist Rashad Alakbarov from Azerbaijan uses suspended translucent objects and other found materials to create light and shadow paintings on walls. The best part is that you can easily create something similar at home – all you need is one or two lamps and some items from your desk.
The stunning light painting below, made with an array of colored airplanes has found its way to exhibitions like the Fly to Baku at De Pury Gallery in London.

Blue moon to light up the night sky this week

Skywatchers should circle Aug. 31 on their calendars, for the date offers the last chance to see a so-called "blue moon" for nearly three years.

 

The moon reaches its full phase at 9:58 a.m. EDT (1358 GMT) Friday, marking the second full moon of August (the previous one occurred Aug. 1). Stargazers won't be able to see two full moons in a single month again until July 2015.

 

Friday's full moon won't actually be blue, unless a load of dust or ash in the atmosphere lends it that particular hue from your vantage point. In any event, blue moons aren't named for their color, and they look like any other full moon in the sky most of the time.

 

Rather, the term has always been associated with an "extra" full moon. In the first half of the 20th century, for example, it apparently referred to the third full moon of a season — spring, summer, winter or fall — that boasted four full moons instead of the usual three.

 

But that definition was misinterpreted over the years, and today we call the second full moon in a single month a "blue moon."
